•Honest and idealistic, Xiao Xingchen is often described as the "bright moon and gentle breeze". She is like a beacon of light and known to the cultivation world for her decency and skill. People call for her when they need help, and Xingchen will always go out and hunt the monsters that go bump in the night. Or just try to make someone's life a little easier. She has no use for material possessions, so only takes what she needs. This includes monetary compensation for her work.

•Socially awkward, Xingchen was raised essentially in isolation with very few other cultivators, all of whom were more focused on enhancing their cultivation. Because of this, she doesn't know how the average person or cultivator acts, let alone how to respond to them or form healthy relationships. She becomes friends with another cultivator, Song Zichen, who feels much the same way. She thinks life is just like a story, so any joke or story she tells ends up being utterly boring and something she's experienced herself. She is more likely to believe stories as fact rather than potential lies or exaggerations.

•While Xingchen is very compassionate, she lacks empathy. She will always think the best of others, but because she isn't capable of understanding their feelings, she is blind to how people really are. Learning the childish revenge a cultivator named Xue Yang wrought on an entire clan confused her enough she kept chasing Xue Yang, trying to understand but failing. On another scale, she scolded a pick-pocket (a girl called A-Qing) into being more careful, then letting the girl keep her money purse so she wouldn't have to steal until the little coin there ran out, and she tended to a stranger's injuries without asking them any questions. She took care of both pick-pocket and wounded stranger past their initial meeting.

•Ignorant and naïve, she believes in the good intentions of others to a degree that brings destruction down on her loved ones. Simply because she does good in the world, she believes other people will treat her the same and not try to trick her. Unfortunately because of this, Xue Yang murdered Xingchen's closest companion, Song Zichen's clan in revenge, blinded Zichen, and escaped. Xingchen was willing to tear her own eyes out so Zichen could have them, believing that would set things right so she could go back to cultivating with Zichen, but instead was pushed away by both Zichen and her master. So instead of being forcibly blind, Xingchen bound her eyes and lived life as if she were blind anyway, and braided her hair in silent symbol to be more mindful of her mistakes. Eventually this left her hanging with A-Qing, who did end up caring for her, and a wounded stranger who, for three years, they were good, close friends. Except that friend? Was Xue Yang, fooling Xingchen with nice manners and a change in his voice. Because of Xue Yang's manipulations, Xingchen killed a number of innocent people, believing them to be ghosts, including Song Zichen. When she finally found out the truth, Xingchen fell apart and slit her own throat.

•Xingchen is an orphan who was taken from a poor village by her master, Baoshan Sanren and raised to be a cultivator. She excelled, forming a dense golden core by a young age. However she wanted to help the world, so broke with tradition of staying at her master's side and left the mountain, as two others before had.

•She meets and befriends Song Zichen, they become cultivation partners despite Zichen continuing to cultivate at Baixue Temple and Xingchen continuing to go wherever she feels she is needed most. They confront and hunt down Xue Yang, capturing Xue Yang at Yueyang Chang clan's massacre, with the help of Wei Wuxian. She briefly speaks with Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang, and Meng Yao before Xue Yang is taken back to face justice under Nie Mingjue in the Unclean Realm in Qinghe.

•After going off on her own to allow Song Zichen the chance to visit Baixue for the master's birthday, she eventually returns in time to find a blinded Song Zichen and murdered clan. Learning it was Xue Yang's doing, but hearing her partner blame her for it and told to never come near Zichen again, wounded Xingchen deeply. In an effort to make things right again, she took Zichen to Baoshan Sanren, breaking her vow to never return, and begged her master to return her partner's sight.

•Baoshan turned her away, though kept Zichen behind despite Xingchen's offer to give her eyes as payment. She was told to return to the world and never break her vow again, that Zichen is beyond her now. So Xingchen bound her eyes, learned how to live without self-denied sight, and made her way with a broken heart through villages, continuing to cultivate to the best of her ability.

•She ran into another blind girl, A-Qing, a thief and pick-pocket, who stole her coin purse then stuck close for protection. Together, they started to travel. Only to come across a wounded stranger, and Xingchen thought to help them too. She did her best to heal the stranger, and never asked questions or pried into her companions' pasts. Years passed peacefully, until A-Qing told her the name of their friend - Xue Yang, the day after Xingchen had saved their friend from another monster. Finding out the monster was Song Zichen and that Xingchen had killed her own partner was enough to drive Xingchen to suicide.
